I found Buried Rivers an intriguing book written with eloquence and intimacy. As I read, I sat with a map of Poland and started drawing a genogram to get to know the author’s family and their history. I feel it takes tremendous courage and strength to ask if there is basic goodness when reflecting on one of the darkest periods of the world’s history. In Family Constellation work I learned that current generations are influenced and impacted by past generations and Ellen Korman Mains shows through her personal history how past generations can be helped; as well, as healing oneself. I felt like I was traveling with the author and despite the obvious solemnity of the material, the book is both captivating, moving, educational and it deeply touched my heart…hoping that we learn from the past and open our hearts for all beings today. I deeply appreciate Ellen Mains for writing this book and sharing it with us. I have recommended all my friends to read this book…a must read.
I’m so glad I read Ellen Main’s book Buried Rivers. I’d expected to learn about the author’s family and their fate in the Polish ghetto and at Auschwitz, which I certainly did. And I appreciated, in particular, her Uncle George’s own account of his time in the camps and how, as a young and daring man, he survived horrendous treatment by the Nazis. But what was so surprising was the vivid, interior life of the author – Ms. Mains is at times nearly overtaken by the ghosts of her ancestors. In other hands, this experience could come off as tawdry. But here I felt invited to explore the possibility of tormented ancestors seeking relief in the journey of a living relative still able to navigate the world. The fact that Ms. Mains doesn’t provide a simple, new age-y resolution keeps the read real. I might’ve liked more about the contrast between the Jewish understanding of life after death and Buddhism’s (Ms. Mains is a long time Buddhist practitioner), but perhaps this would’ve taken away from the experiential emphasis. Smoothly written, moving briskly through her six trips to Poland, and despite the obvious solemnity of the material, the book is both enjoyable and moving.
Ellen Mains writes with such a gripping depth and eloquence! I don't remember feeling so compelled by a book. There are clues in each paragraph about her journey and my own life. When I discovered I had war-related PTSD, it was not yet a diagnosis, and I learned from books about the Holocaust. I wondered about things my family did not talk about that I felt must be important. This book has relevance well beyond the holocaust. Whatever family story we start with, whatever nurturing we do not get, or if later in life we have great or lasting trauma, this book is a template to draw on to find the meaning that has been lost or never discovered- a modern Odyssey. I met her in her years of writing and immediately looked forward to learning more from her.Such problems cripple one from knowing the fullness of life and joy, making any spiritual understanding shallow and not heart-felt. Though my background is not Jewish and I did not know my Polish family well, I began a similar path of recovery including meditation and she has provided me a richer sense on how to guide myself.
The Kabbalah teaches that life and death stand at the intersection of many worlds, seen and unseen. Ellen Korman Mains, a Jew and practicing Buddhist, indirectly demonstrates this potent truth through an autobiographical exploration into her family’s past during and before the holocaust. The author’s decades of meditation practice yields a potent introspective perspective on historical and genealogical research. This leads to groundbreaking insights into the nature of forgiveness, family dynamics and the forces of history. Along the way she also shows us a side of Buddhism that often escapes modern scholars. The “doctrines†of Buddhism are not there to mark accomplishments along something called “the Buddhist path;†they are tools to assist us in discovering who we really are.
It might be easy to think that you’ve read a ‘book like this’ before - that so much has been written about the Holocaust. Yet, for all the stories that have been told, and voices that have been heard, most will never be. This book honors all those voices.Talking with a friend, I described reading Buried Rivers as meditative, which they found perplexing. How could it be? But as a contemplative, and a meditation teacher for many years, Ellen Korman Mains is acutely attuned to fine details, allowing the reader to walk with her along the streets of Poland, breathing in the atmosphere and out the questions that arise. Most of the questions that arise are appropriately, unanswerable. Thus, traveling with Ellen broke my heart, but also imparted into that broken heart a profound and lasting gift.
This era of human history is one that continues to haunt us and continues to offer lots of opportunities for us to learn lessons about humanity. The author's personal journey of exploring her past as it relates to this era is a fresh and much needed perspective and offers a healing opportunity for the reader. The writing is also excellent and the book is easy and enjoyable to read even when dealing with challenging content.
Beautifully written, this memoir is a journey moving from suffering transforming into a deeply felt knowing. Don’t be afraid of the suffering, it’s nuanced with humor, love and acceptance. Ultimately, this book is a joy to read, well-paced, interesting and intricately researched.
