I bought this book for my 6 year old who has m believe naADHD. After he knows he has it, but I got the feeling he didn't really 'get' it , no matter how many times we explained it. When we read this book, his eyes lit up and said 'mommy this book was made about me! Every single thing is me!!' It made me tear up seeing him get happy that all the things he was going through didn't make him weird or a bad kid. He LOVES this book. The pictures aren't colored, and when he pointed it out I said he can color them, which he thought was awesome. My husband who also has ADHD read through it and nodded his head the entire time, like yup yup this is exactly how it is. As much as I know about it, this book was able to say exactly how it feels to have it in a way a non ADHD brain just doesn't understand. It goes through the way the boy feels, what he does, and his process of medicine, a 'talking dr', his parents, and how he still has to work hard at things, but with all the help his life is so much better. Highly reccomend, no matter what your doing to treat it, this book is the best I've found to help a kid understand ADHD and that they're not alone:)
My son says Cory is just like him and thanked me for buying him the book. I had left it out for him to discover in the morning and he noticed it and read it through right away, so the cover must look appealing as well, especially as he isn't normally big on reading. The book really helped him feel better about himself and see that there are lots of other kids like him. He also said he didn't know some of the things mentioned would be caused by ADHD and was very pleased that Cory had so many characteristics in common with him. Actually, when I read through I kept thinking how eerie it was how similar this fictional kid is to mine, almost an exact copy!My son is 8.
Our 10 years old was recently diagnosed, we read this book together and discussed where he was like the boy and where he had different experiences. I love that the book discusses solutions, it is not only about "this is hard for me" but more about "if I do it this way, I can succeed"
I wanted a good book for my 2nd grade son--to explain what we suspected may become an ADHD diagnosis just before we went to the doctor. It didn't suit our needs at all--because it's very focused on issues like not being able to sit still in class, having trouble making friends because of being impulsive and not being patient. My son has the other type--Inattentive ADD. He's very chill and calm, but he daydreams constantly. He can't pay attention--head is in the clouds always. We found the book "Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention" suited our needs much better. Its full of checklists, which divide out what type you may be dealing with.
It's an ok book. I have it a four star becaus witness felt as if the book was written by a person who went to school for child psychology -vs- a parent of an ADHD child. It lacked the warmth that a parent would have and their desire to lift their ADHD child up. It's not a bad book; just not exactly what I wanted to pour into my child who daily gets the negetive reenforcement from a world they don't fit in to.
It may go without saying, but this book is for ADHD not ADD. The kid has the H for sure in ADHD. I rated five stars even though it didn’t meet my needs bc that was my fault, it is clear in the title of the book that this is for ADHD. There still might be some ADD behaviors in here but not enough to be helpful, and H symptoms would make a kid not able to relate anyway.
After my 7 year old son told me for the "gazillionth" time how much he really liked this book, I felt I had to write a review. He was diagnosed with ADHD within the last month of his first grade year. By then he was also struggling with low self-esteem, only a few loyal friends, continuous confusion about the sheer number of social rules and a general antipathy towards authority figures (namely parents and teachers). We read this book to him because we felt it helped to explain his ADHD in a way that we could not articulate. I was surprised when he told me how much he liked "Corey", because Corey was just like him. He began asking us to read it to him every night. I believe that the kid's level descriptions of his behavior helped him to understand his diagnosis. It has helped him to articulate his feelings, moods and describe his behaviors during the day. I am most thankful that he no longer exclusively responds with "nothing", when I ask how his day went. At times he just flips through the book, then he comes over to talk. I searched through a number of books and found this one matter of fact, without a sugary positive nor negative tone. It works for my family and I need to find more like it.
Love love love thisMy son is adhd I read the book to him and it elicited question about how he acts and feels
